Title: Children of Blood and Bone
Author: Tomi Adeyemi
Goodreads synopsis:
Zélie Adebola remembers when the soil of Orïsha hummed with magic. Burners ignited flames, Tiders beckoned waves, and Zélie’s Reaper mother summoned forth souls.
But everything changed the night magic disappeared. Under the orders of a ruthless king, maji were killed, leaving Zélie without a mother and her people without hope.
Now Zélie has one chance to bring back magic and strike against the monarchy. With the help of a rogue princess, Zélie must outwit and outrun the crown prince, who is hell-bent on eradicating magic for good.
Danger lurks in Orïsha, where snow leoponaires prowl and vengeful spirits wait in the waters. Yet the greatest danger may be Zélie herself as she struggles to control her powers and her growing feelings for an enemy.
I’m so sorry, but I didn’t like this book. I thought that story was really predictable because there aren’t any major twists during the plot that would shock the reader and spice up the story a little bit.
Even the characters seemed really average to me. They just felt flat.
Of course, the main character Zelie is independent, which is now expected of girls, but at times she’s also thoughtless and most of the times she doubts about herself. But the reader knows that in the end, she will find strength and self-confidence in every situation. And of course, during her “plot journey,” she’ll become a young, independent woman. Amari is supposed to be her opposite – shy and always keeping a low profile, but I’m sure, she’ll also be completely different girl/young woman at the end. There is also some love, romance and discovering sexuality. I think that in the future we can expect a love triangle also.
The story is pretty obvious about its main theme – let your voice be heard and don’t let the system(?)/others break you. Carry on, be yourself and be proud of it. It’s going to be hard but in the end, it’ll be worth it.
Probably the story more fits younger readers and they would like it more than I did. Because I was really bored at the moments.
Oh, and can I say something about the ending: f*** it. No reader deserves such a cliffhanger.
We shall see if I would continue with the series.
